Saudi Cup at Sale Golf Club

Sale Golf Club, founded in 1913, is a well-established and beautiful parkland course, nestled next to the River Mersey, much like its neighbour, Didsbury. The club is steeped in history, most notably for their ‘Open Champion’, Richard Burton, who holds the distinction of being the last ‘Club Professional’ to win the Open Championship. Carved out of an old tree stump, you will find his likeness standing watch over the first Tee and perhaps chuckling at the usual wayward society shots.

Despite a later start, the day promised fine weather, and the 14 players who gathered for the Saudi Cup were in high spirits, eager to enjoy a competitive day of golf. We owe a great deal of gratitude to our sponsor, Ron Marshal, for providing some excellent silverware for the event.

The competition saw some fine performances. The twos pot was shared between Dave Mac and Alex Baker, both securing birdies with contrasting but equally impressive approaches. Alex showcased his finesse with a lovely pitch at Bunker Hill, landing the ball within 3 feet of the hole. Dave, on the other hand, executed a beautifully ‘thinned’ stroke that rolled to within 5 feet on the long par 3, Jackson’s Boat demonstrating consummate banditry.

Alex Baker’s winning ways didnt stop there. His remarkable shot on the 17th at Bunker Hill also earned him the Nearest the Pin prize, a testament to his precision and control on the course, well for that hole anyway.

The runner-up for the day was Joe Wilcox, who used his trusty star spangled Callaway ball to amass 40 points, just missing out on the top spot by two strokes. His consistent play was commendable and he certainly kept the competition fierce.

However, it was Dave Mac who emerged victorious, with a healthy 42 points. This performance only served to solidify his reputation as a ‘bandit’ within our ranks—a label he isnt shrugging off so easily.

We look forward to seeing all members at our next event at Walton Hall on the 4th of August. Please remember, as this is a municipal location, the cafe is operated separately, so coffee and bacon rolls will need to be purchased on the day.

Thank you to everyone who participated and made the day memorable. Here’s to more great rounds and camaraderie in the future!
