This past Sunday, members of the Alfie Noakes Golf Society convened at the historic Disley Golf Club for what turned out to be a memorable day of golf, camaraderie and glorious weather. Disley Golf Club, established in 1889, is one of the oldest inland courses in the UK. With its rich history and breathtaking views of Derbyshire, it provided the perfect setting for this year’s Founders Cup competition.
Nine dedicated members arrived early, eager to soak up the sunshine and take on the beautifully groomed course. Unlike their last visit earlier in the year, which was marked by damp conditions, the course this time was dry, firm and in excellent shape. The sloping, fast greens added an extra layer of challenge, making every putt a true test of skill.
As the competition unfolded, Dave Mac emerged with an impressive score of 36 points. He claimed the Founders Trophy, despite jokingly lamenting that he only had “20 bloody shots.” His performance on the course further cemented his reputation as ‘El Bandito’.
One of the highlights of the day was the nearest-the-pin challenge on the 15th hole. The uphill green proved tricky, with only Dave Mac managing to hold the green for one of his few greens in regulation. However, his putt for twos was a little too enthusiastic, hitting the back of the cup with enough force to ensure that the twos pot rolled over to the next event.
The runner-up of the day was Dave Jeffs, who, after recently returning from hip surgery, delivered a performance that must have been particularly satisfying. His steady play earned him well-deserved recognition and showed that he is back in form.
It was noted, however, that ‘The Visor’ was conspicuously absent from the event. This raised some eyebrows, and the Visor Committee has reportedly added this as an agenda item for their next meeting. Perhaps we will get to the bottom of this mystery soon.
After the round, members gathered on the club’s balcony, basking in the warm sunshine and enjoying the stunning panoramic views of Derbyshire. The day was a true celebration of everything that makes golf such a cherished pastime—great weather, a challenging course, and good company.
As the sun set on another successful Founders Cup, the members left with smiles on their faces, already looking forward to the next event at Cavendish. With the twos pot still intact and the Visor Committee on high alert, there’s sure to be plenty to talk about when the society meets again.
