The Not So ‘Summer’ Shield at Hazel Grove Golf Club

The Alfie Noakes Golf Society descended upon Hazel Grove Golf Club for the much-anticipated Summer Shield event kindly sponsored by Ian Morris, a day that promised stellar performances on one of Cheshire’s “hidden gems.”

This Cheshire course, lauded by golf journalists for its charm and sporting true USPGA specification greens, seemed set for a perfect day of golf. Alas, Mother Nature had other plans. As the event teed off, spirits were high and swings were confident. However, it wasn’t long before the weather decided to show off its own range of skills, turning the day into an drizzly and damp adventure.

Despite the rain the competition continued with the kind of grit and determination that Alfie Noakes Golf Society members are known for. Peter Evans was the standout star of the soggy showdown. He clinched the winner’s trophy with 33 points, showing that neither rain nor the challenging greens could dampen his game. His highlight of the day? An incredible chip-in that secured him the twos pot and an impressive £75. One can only imagine Peter’s satisfaction as he pocketed the winnings.

Hot on his heels was our illustrious Mr. Captain, Colin Butler. Colin’s 32 points might not have secured the top spot, but his consistent play saw him narrowly edge out the formidable Mike Oakes on countback.

Nearest the pin honors went to Ron Marshal, whose precision was the envy of the field. Ron’s ace-like accuracy might suggest a previous career in darts, or maybe just too much time spent in bunkers prior to that perfect shot.

And then, bringing up the rear, was Mr Alex “yes preferred lies, thats a fine” Baker. Alex’s round was, by his own admission, a bit of a nightmare which I can attest to.  Joe Wilcox would have been proud of Alex’s landscaping skills on the tee box with a 3 Wood, culminating in a rather humbling 18 points. For his efforts—or lack thereof—Alex had the dubious honor of donning “The Visor,” a sartorial symbol of struggle that he wore with the grace of a golfer who knows there’s always next time.

Alex, we salute your perseverance and remind you that the only way is up from here! Despite the less-than-ideal weather, the day was a testament to the camaraderie and competitive spirit of the Alfie Noakes Golf Society. Here’s to dry days and drier fairways at the next event – Style!
