The Memorial Cup – Style Golf Club

The Memorial Cup, held in honour of our dearly departed members, took place on a beautiful day at the picturesque Style Golf Course. The event began on a solemn note with a minute’s silence, allowing us all to reflect on the cherished memories of those no longer with us.

The course was in immaculate condition, a true testament to its reputation. The beautiful setting was however marred at times by the relentless hounding of horseflies otherwise known as ‘you little fekker’, which seemed determined to target members’ legs throughout the day.

Despite the challenges, our illustrious Mr. Captain rose to the occasion with an outstanding performance, scoring an impressive 44 points to secure the Cup. The course seem to suite Mr Captain producing a consistent round and it even occasionally favoured him, guiding wayward shots back onto the fairway which was promptly followed by overtures of ‘lucky bastard’.

Close behind claiming the runner-up spot with an equally commendable 39 points was Ron Marshall completing a consistent round.

Mr. Captain also showcased his precision on the 14th 111-yard par 3, clinching the nearest-the-pin prize to within about 4 feet. However, in a twist of fate, he narrowly missed his birdie and a claim on the twos pot, adding a touch of drama to his otherwise stellar round.

The highlight of the day for some was the shared achievement of Mike Oakes and Dave Mac, who both clinched the highly desired twos pot. Mike’s was all smiles with his gracious congratulation of Dave’s chip-in all be it through gritted teeth, exemplifying the sportsmanship and camaraderie that define our society.

Today Dave also did his best to shrug off his Bandit label, struggling to score well with bogies after double bogies. But then, like a plot twist in a B-movie, he sank a Par 5 birdie and snagged a juicy 5-pointer. Cue the facepalm and a fine – Doh!’

Special thanks go to Brian, who stepped in to manage the fines with his usual colourful flair, ensuring the event was not only competitive but also entertaining. Notably absent however was a deserving recipient of ‘The Visor’. Perhaps this elusive honor will be awarded at Captain’s Weekend at Herons Reach in Blackpool next weekend, where we look forward to up to three days of competitive golf, camaraderie and thick heads.

Here’s to the memories made and the anticipation of more to come. Hope to see many of you at Blackpool!
